Every West Ham fan was clear. We were get a fantastic attacking wingback. Defensively we were getting a player needing tonnes of work. Work we have done with KLP. And more required.

For the DOF’s, has the feeling ’Live by the sword. Dead by the sword’

El Hadji Malick Diouf

I’ve seen enough to suggest he will come good.
Yep I agree. His attacking contributions are superb.

Defending was all over the place tonight but he’s 21, not 28. It’ll come, and with KLP playing as he is there’s no pressure on Diouf to immediately become the answer for us defensively.

Being 21 is no excuse. He cost £40m and given his specialist position is LB or full back, his defending should not be 'all over the place' for that money.

Anyone can make a mistake, but he was caught out numerous times. I agree our coaching will improve him, but I expect much more for that kind of outlay.

If his strength is going forward, let's stick him on the wing instead.

We've bought a left back who can't defend at all but is good going forward..... I can't get my head around the he'll come good thoughts as there is nothing defensively he does well, the simple things he can't seem to get on top of. Simple is good, end of but he can't do anything defensively that gives me any confidence. In my opinion he's 4th choice, behind KLP, Rico and Hickey. West Ham have had our pants down. One of our most disappointing signings however I sincerely hope he proves me wrong. As Always Up The Bees.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

He played 90 minutes away at Aston Villa in the 2-2 draw. Can’t recall (m)any comments about his inability to defend that day and didn’t think he was a liability resulting in all the Villa attacks and goals coming down his side.

Other than that he’s come on with 10-15mins remaining of games to give us more athleticism and natural left footed crosses.

Had a poor game away at Sunderland defensively, one of our more dangerous players going forward. The headed nearly assist that Wilson had a big chance from a particular highlight. Defensively he was poor but Ta Bi played out of his skin. The disparity between players on a good and bad day exacerbated things. He’ll be ok and his song will catch on in the stands eventually.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

He may come good defensively with some good coaching, but will he get the minutes to develop? Strikes me as more of an attacking sub option to come in off the bench when we needs goals. Not when we need to hang on to a lead.

Based on what sample size? Honestly it makes me sick that people form a judgement after 2 or 3 games on new signings knowing full well the past has shown that it can be at least a season until their true potential is shown. Ridiculous.

He's a defender and the Villa game he wasn't great however last night he looked defensively shocking against a player lacking game time, a little like Diouf but still he should be better. A defenders primary role is as the role indicates and he's poor. Dango gave him the run around last season and we view things very different but £40m on a player who's better going forward than he is defending.... That's wrong 100% but as I've said hopefully he proves his doubters wrong but there is no evidence to suggest it.

We’ve brought in plenty of players previously we’ve put in defence who’ve struggled but we coach them up. Collins looked awful (and Wolves fans said as much) when we first signed but even then you could see the talent was there and we coached him up. We’ve had plenty of attackers play full back over time (Canos, Mbuemo, KLP obviously) who we’ve coached up.

The talent that Diouf brings is clear to see. I’m sure the DoFs looked at him and said “if we can train him defensively like we have so many others, he has elite potential” - and I don’t think anything we’ve seen so far disproves that thought. It’ll be a gamble, it has to be - we can’t buy ready made elite players. If we’re to progress it’ll be by buying players like Diouf and coaching them up.

He wasn’t as bad as the pelters he’s getting, he got very little help from others and most of the time the mistakes he made go unpunished. I have full faith he will get a lot better in time.

I assume you watch a lot of football but the very least I'd expect a player to do is to do the simple things well, he doesn't. Of course he hasn't played many games for us, but he played in the Premier League last season albeit in a poor side. He just doesn't look like he can defend at the moment, train them up narrative etc I get that but he should be better and putting KLP under pressure which he isn't. As Always Up The Bees

One of our most disappointing signings 😂 he’s started 2 games ffs….. bit of an overreaction wouldn’t you say? He’s 21, let the coaches do their thing. I’m pretty confident he will prove you wrong btw

I doubt KLP would have done any better last night. Since Valdimarrson would still have been there and basically gifted them three goals.

I appreciate the more balanced response, thanks 👌

Personally feel he’s too error prone defending. I see people saying he’s good going forward. Yes he can cross the ball, but only on one foot. Not seen much dribbling ability or even a 5 foot pass with his right foot suggests his attacking will be very one dimensional.

Have to trust the club because they usually get things right but feel that 40 mill could have been spent on a more creative attacker which we are lacking when trying to break down teams.

Hope he comes good

To me great defenders are players like Des Walker,Keith Millen,Danny Salman and currently Rico Henry. The type the song 'you'll never beat -----" were assigned to. Not sure any of our current first.team full back choices fit in that bracket yet. Diouf has struggled to cope.with fast speedy wingers.but so have Kayode and Lewis Potter but all these players are vital as part of the attacking plans. Not sure where Hickey fits in ,inteligent good technician but lacking a bit in pace. Frederick an un known quantity at the moment. One thing may help is assigned Defence coach.Thomas.had Reimer then Norgaard not sure who currently carries that responsibility in Keiths setup.

Danis Salman and Keith Millen were not "great" defenders, great for Brentford yes, but spent almost all of their careers playing lower league football. The Premier League is very different.

Diouf is a boy in a man's world at the moment. He has played in five different countries in four years and barely had time to settle anywhere ,but has limitless potential and already has 25 caps for a strong national team . Surely everyone can see what he can bring offensively and the club clearly feel they can work on and improve him defensively. How many mistakes have they made and how many players have improved with Brentford coaching ? Yet it seems every new signing gets slagged off after 10 minutes. Forget the fee, Giles/ MB and co were happy to pay it, it is the going rate and it is not "our" money. BTW, we are 6th in the Premier League in case anyone missed that.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Do think it's important to point out he played the whole game in the attacking third with Janelt covering behind him, every counter our fullbacks had to run the length of the pitch to get back. I'd argue he played as a winger for a majority of the game last night.

I don't think you can blame him for the second goal, he got in position and made the tackle, it just happened to bounce off the attacker and fall perfectly for the cut back. I'd more question where was the marking in the central area.

Some of the crosses second half were incredible, case to be made for playing both him and KLP on the left with them swapping during the game.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

In recent history I could name many players who have been written off after just a handful of games who have then gone on to demonstrate that we have absolutely got our recruitment right and bought in real quality. I fully trust the process and that Diouf will fit that model.

Would Rico have been trying to tackle there? He would have been suffocating the player, trying to turn him away and doing all he could to stop the ball going across goal. Actually getting the ball might not have been his priority.

We had to watch Keith Millen mature on the job from a very raw teenager to the finished product, at times it wasn't pretty.

I mean I think Rico is one of the best defensive LB's I've seen and isn't 21 years old. I don't see any benefit in judging a guy in a game where we gave Sunderland the whole half to run into at will, players were scrambling back to defend and the organisation as a team in that 20 mins was horror. I'm pretty sure I could find clips of Rico missing tackles, getting beaten when committing to a tackle as well, we just remember the ones that lead to goals.

Got to also wonder why in those goals were 3 players unmarked in the box each time to score from close range. The goals were down to the tactics first half imo.

Age is more of an "excuse" than his price tag. He's clearly been valued on his potential and must be considered 'in development'. At the moment, he's number two to Lewis-Potter, who is being overworked right now.

I’m not saying it’s an excuse, I’m simply agreeing that I’ve seen enough to say he will eventually be worth the money we’ve paid. If a full back at that age could defend well with the quality he possesses in attack he’d have been snapped up by a top club.

His defending is his weakness, we knew that when he signed, but once he develops that side of his game there’s a fantastic player in there, because in two months I’ve already seen better crossing from him than I’ve ever seen from Rico.

He’s very much a work in progress and until he improves defensively I don’t see him starting much over KLP, but in the meantime very little is gained from people getting on his back or wanting to throw him out of position. Like with most of our signings, give him a bit of time.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Can we just leave the price tag out of it? Literally what's the point, the price is the price. We are now a top half Premier league team, West Ham weren't gonna sell him to us for peanuts. The value of anything is what someones willing to pay for it.

To him as a player, there's a lot of work to do but he's got an "X factor" which is his attacking ability. We'll work on the defensive side.

The reality is Rico Henry was an England player nailed on before his injury, he was never going to be easy to replace, and despite KLP's decent form at times and Diouff having an X factor, he still hasn't been. I'm hoping he picks things up defensively sooner rather than later.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Would Rico have been trying to tackle there? He would have been suffocating the player, trying to turn him away and doing all he could to stop the ball going across goal. Actually getting the ball might not have been his priority.
Yes, I thought about whether Henry would have done better, and concluded that he would probably have shepherded the player out of the danger zone, or at least delayed it. It seems that he’s not part of the future, sad to say, which I think is premature, and I also I think Diouf needs a bit of work defensively before being first choice, especially when there’s Hickey as well to consider,

the difference is the players you mentioned cost a fraction of £40m , really for that money we should gettinng someone who can step right in now .If he was £5m and neeeds lots of coaching we'd find that more aceptable

Why? How many players costing far more have not hit the ground running at other clubs? Wirtz is a prime example and he was nearly 3 times as much - forget the price tag and look objectively at how much he has actually played for us to date.

KLP took 3 seasons to cement a place as a starter and to truly be appreciated, 2 games is not remotely close to being a big enough sample size to judge on.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Might be the 1% of my time here where I’m not a fan of a signing the board have made. I can understand the data and the physical tools he has, but for me; he’s got a clear lack of defensive ability and IMO, isn’t the smartest with decision making. Hes 21, so that may come over time, but I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

He does put in some great crosses , would be nice if someone would actually get on the end of one of them

Absolutely. I know you don't get much bang for bucks nowadays we presumably didn't buy him as a work in progress.
I really can't see the point of a defender who can't defend.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

He's still 21. We did not sign him to be the finished article so I will assess him better later in the season once our coaches have worked with him more. If he was 24 I'd be concerned, but I'm not yet and we're not in the position where we have to rely on him whether he's ready or not.

As @upnorthbee wrote, the price the Club paid (true or not) is not controlled by the player or the fans. The value of a player to the Club is across the period he's contracted to us not across a few weeks, so it's not really relevant ©Oscar Wilde.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Ive just watched the hi-lights .They make better viewing than watching the whole game last night . He gets forward well and starts a few attacks and could of scored with his weaker right foot .His header was weak for the goal , a mistake , he almost tackles their player for another goal . I can see the potential

El Hadji Malick Diouf

Possibly based also on his time at West Ham when it was exactly the same?

El Hadji Malick Diouf

be interesting to see his running stats from last night. Personally I think the role he was asked to play is too demanding

El Hadji Malick Diouf

What I can’t understand is that we have KLP, Hickey and Rico who can play LB, we also have a decent young LB in Magoma whose on loan at Pompey so why did we need to sign Diouf for £40m? He showed good things tonight going forwards but defensively, he’s a clown

I have seen enough, he beats his player every time and has the best delivery in the club. I very much doubt his future will be at left back. I am tired of all our crosses not beating the the first man, Diouf and Anthony have been brought in for that alone I suspect.

And anyone who calls a new Brentford signing a clown, let alone a 20 year old who has only made 1-2 starts for us can hang their head in shame, we don't want that at this club,

Fine, then play him as a winger and not a sodding left back.
What's the point of his wonderful crosses if we leak goals like last night.

You can write him off then, and this certainly won't be the first time you have done it, and then you ca be the first one to moan about us selling a great player in a few years time. I would hate to live in your world.

Don't know what I've done to deserve your f*****g unpleasant post and resort to personal insults but if that's your world mate you're welcome to it. As it happens I wouldn't want you to be closer than a country mile to my world. Have a nice day!

El Hadji Malick Diouf

you do know defenders are supposed to stop them before they reach the keeper?
Yeah…and no defender on the planet has ever done that all the time.
You telling me that Virgil Van Dijk has never misplaced a header or had the ball bobble away from him?
Simple fact was the keeper was sh*t, went walkabout, and let in too many half chances.

El Hadji Malick Diouf

I think we need to take into account that Diouf Collins and Shuster haven't played in a competitive match together before but all needed minutes last night. When you add to that a poor performance by Hakon who needs games and a familiar cb pairing in front of him, your going to get some missunderstanding.
