Not sure who I want in this one. Not keen on either.
Should be a good watch though.

Portugal please - got money on them to win the whole thing and are a weaker team than Spain so better for England if Spain go out...

I’m sure that those of us who stayed up late last night to watch the England game and have had to do a day’s work are most likely to fall asleep trying to watch tonight’s game no matter how exciting it is likely to be 😴😴

The Battle of the Slapheads:

Roberto Martínez versus Luis de la Fuente.

Portugal are not really playing with any great urgency. It’s all very slowwwwwwww.

Hopefully one or both of them will take a risk second half.

Surprisingly even.
Portugal keep getting close to big chances but just not quite.
Hard one to call with any confidence yet.

Hoping Spain beat the 10 sardine fisherman from Albufeira and the pretty boy waiter from Funchal!

Terrible game ! Cant stay awake for it after last nights exertions

Two very good teams but their defences are really strong and neither side really wants to take a gamble. Hard to see this not going to pens.

Why the hell do we need to see the "ref's view" of a goal. Tech for tech's sake.
We need to see Ronaldo's view of the goal!!

R16: Portugal 0 Spain 1

Every other player going round shaking hands etc whilst Ronaldo stands there, posing, for the cameras.
What a nob.

Maybe this is a way of FIFA trying to encourage younger viewers into the career of refereeing: "Best seat in the house."

Dull, dull, dull!! Spain not really on it and Portugal not good enough.

As much as Danny Murphy highlighted the embarrassment of riches on the bench, both teams really lack an out and out striker. Ronaldo's past it, did nothing for large periods.

Yes Spain have won lots without a clear striker before, but for once, if I were England I'd feel i could really get at them

Worst match of the World Cup so far. And that's saying something

Spain seem to have only played in second gear so far which could be ominous as they've got another three to go through if they want. I think however that their real weak link is Rodri who is ageing and probably not 100% fit .

I was actually saying to my boy that Portugal dont win things because they arent a team.
At the end, the Spainiards are huddling together, celebrating whilst no Portuguese was within 5 yards of another.

Portugal problem is that they rely so much on Ronaldo that the players picked suit Ronaldo more than anything. So they cant change things up (could say the same with England if Kane gets fooked, though Toney is similar but not same standard as Kane).

When Ronaldo is not available, Portugal have looked more like a team.
I know it was only Armenia (in comparison to Portugals riches of talent) but the game he was suspended for they ran out 9-1 winners. They looked sharp. They played for each other.
With Ronaldo, they look for him, and him only.
Same with Brazil. They mostly go through Vini Jr, or Neymar.

I thought Raphael Leao (sp?) was brilliant in the last round. Can’t believe Martinez started Felix ahead of him yesterday. Reminds me of the old England teams where we had to shoehorn the big names in, and it just never looked like a team.

Portugal playing with 10 men and have been for 3 tournaments. Its an utter joke.

Argentina carry Messi but he is a different personality to Ronaldo and his style of play makes him more affective when he gets the ball. He can still jink past a player and curl it inside the post, he also finds pockets of space and slides passes and crosses that set other players up. He can't run all game, but when he gets it he still has the ability to create magic.

Ronaldo was a powerhouse built on speed, strength, quick feet and aggression. When that strength goes all you have is a bloke standing in the 6 yard box gesticulating because he isn't being given tap ins. Nobody likes him, they can all see it, it embarrassing for all concerned. If you get him the box with the ball he will still score goals, but so would any decent player, but you can't play with 10 every game just to set him up, there are other players who can score those chances who are also contributing in other parts of the pitch and aren't spreading unpleasantness to those around him.

The same with Neymar, why bring on a bloke who can't run anymore, has put on weight and is a total passenger when you have Thiago amongst others on the bench.

They both deserve to be out.

Portugal should have done better with that squad even a bit of a golden generation scenario. But as said above have been held back by “having” to include a very past it Ronaldo.

In four years time their “ golden generation” may have past on so maybe an opportunity lost to be winners maybe?

Just going through this thread now so apologies if the point's been made, but it did occur to me during the second half that both teams seemed content to go with the 50% shot at winning on penalties, rather than taking a risk on the field. I suppose Spain were able to offer a different option in the end.

So many dislikable players out there, and yes Ronaldo a total joke. Yamal had a bit of a shocker too.
