R16: USA 1-4 Belgium

Some deranged reaction from Americans on X. I can’t decide if it’s a bit or they actually feel that way. Essentially the most childish cope I’ve seen to football banter - yeah theh lost but:
- it’s only their 7th favourite sport
- the saved our asses in the war
- the US is a rich country
Entirely a bit. Based on average American viewership, Premier League alone is just behind NHL as the 5th most popular league. My hope has been that after this world cup, soccer will at least overtake hockey here.

The more we know about X, the more we realise that it is not a fair reflection on society though.

Have to be honest, I think you US fans are deluding yourselves with your self- aggrandising. Mexico and Canada got just as far.
A bit harsh (imo). They have undoubtedly improved in recent years, not just the NT, but the whole MLS set-up, too.

And yes, they did turn the dial up to 11 for this tournament, but that happens just as much in this country every four years - "It's coming home" - and doubtless other major countries, too.

As for those two others, while USA aren't as good as Mexico, I'd say they're still a level above Canada who, even with home advantage, were pretty crap.

As I said on here yesterday, its only the Western democracies, countries where corruption and kick backs aren't just seen as a normal and inevitable part of doing business, that are outraged by Infantino. To much of the rest of the world its just standard operating procedure. I do get the sense that FIFA and UEFA are on course for a massive fallout. Its not too difficult to conceive of a situation where UEFA actually breaks away entirely.
Pretty obvious now that under orange fart baby the USA can now be included in "much of the rest of the world".

That’s fine. You’re entitled to your opinion and me mine. I’m sticking with my assessment of them being a bit delusional in their stature. And it’s not like other countries. It’s just particularly unpleasant and nasty in how the US ‘big’ themselves up when it comes to sports (and often society in general). At least that’s what I found when I lived there.

As for Canada, leave them alone 😉 In this tournament, they did better and got further than they ever have done. For such a small football nation and perennial minnows compared to Mexico and US, they have come on leaps and bounds. 1986- 3 games 0 goals. 2022- 3 games 1 goal. 2026- got all the way to the Round of 16. They did themselves proud.
