Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

My mate who’s a Panathinaikos fan has just messaged me saying they’ve agreed a deal for him. Would be sad to see him go, hopefully it’s not true.
Where did he hear it from?

An itk journalist, only agreed with the club not the player yet apparently. A quick search on x shows a lot of their fans saying the same thing

Panathinaikos is "searching" for a midfielder, Jensen and another one in the spotlight

Panathinaikos wants to immediately "close" the gap in its midfield, with Matthias Jensen not playing... alone for the position.

The "greens" have been trying for several days to complete the transfer to "8", with Matthias Jensen being Jacob Nystrup's chosen one from the very beginning, but his case is facing several difficulties.

The fact that Brentford made the most expensive transfer in its history with a player who plays in the same position as the Dane certainly changed the situation and it seems that the "Clover" will make one last attempt to convince the player to come to Greece.

At the same time, it appears from Panathinaikos that there is another case being worked on and that this seems to be the team's main choice, with developments expected immediately.

Machine translated from here

Should be outgoing rumour perhaps

Greece... near Turkey, right? Similar level of crazy media and fan, perchance?

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

I know panathinaikos are a big club in Greece but I can't help but feel that Matti could do better than Greece+conference league.

Also id rather keep him but if he wants a move he would go with my best wishes

Also if he goes maybe we can revisit our veerman interest 👀

The only twitter activity I can find is from accounts with a low amount of following. The biggest account to mention it is.....Beesotted.

It's certainly not imminent. If it's happening at all.

"Ματίας Γένσεν" Παναθηναϊκός on Google brings up quite a few sports news articles about Panathinaikos’ interest

A "checkmate move" with a new tempting offer is expected to complete the transfer.

Panathinaikos never gave up on Matthias Jensen, and you've been reading about that all this time on novasports.gr . According to the latest information, the "Clover" is preparing to submit the final offer to both Brentford and the player's side, in order to complete one of the most important transfers of the summer.

The Danish international midfielder has been the burning desire of the "greens" since the beginning of the transfer window. Despite the difficulties that arose in the negotiations, the "clover" never withdrew its interest and waited for the right moment for the final counterattack.

The presence of Jacob Nystrup on the Panathinaikos bench seems to play an important role in the development of the case. The Danish coach knows Jensen very well, believes in his playing potential and has placed him high on his list of options to strengthen the midfield.

At the same time, the "greens" have submitted a particularly attractive financial proposal to the footballer, which, according to information, gives him money almost double the amount he was earning in the English team. The financial aspect, combined with the prospect of being a key part of the new game plan, has kept Panathinaikos among the first choices for the international midfielder.

With the Brentford management, there was initially a distance in the financial aspect of the transfer, however, in the last proposal made by the people of the Greek team, there was convergence.

If the final contacts in the coming days lead to a definitive agreement with the English club, Panathinaikos will complete a transfer that was considered a priority from the very beginning. Such a development will constitute a substantial reinforcement for the roster and will significantly raise the level of the midfield ahead of the new season.

Who are Novasports? Are they a established print media in Greece, or a very nice website with clicks to sell?

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

He's been linked to Greece for the last couple of windows but more just "X greek club are admirers of Jensen". I read an article saying Jensen himself is concerned with the low level of Greek football but not enough to block the move. However they only have £6m to spend although the wage offer was apparently 2-3x higher than what he's on now (no solid sources) Even at 31 with a year on his deal I can't see this happning. I trust greek transfer rumours about as much as Turkish ones. If he has a place at Brentford to fight for, I think he would always choose to stay.

He is only 30 and in position and style he plays in reality at his peak. I hope we keep him for at least next season whilst team continues to evolve

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

Got more to offer us IMO.

Would be gutted to lose him. Another who knows where we have come from.
Seems insane. The football is better here, they surely can’t offer life changing money, he’s wanted here, has a young family settled. As others have said before, his next move is home.

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

The ones I read said that he wants to compete for trophies once before retirement. Maybe he’s thinking about post football life and wants to go out on a high? I thought he had inconsistent patches last season but there’s still a player there. Wouldn’t be a bad thing to move him on to make way for whoever the midfield replacement is.

He was one of our most consistent midfielders last season.

Talk abut damning with faint praise.

How would describer Igor? 'Can score goal now and then but still think there is a striker there'

I thought it was his best season with us so far. Which begs the question has he reached his full potential yet? His ability to keep the ball when under pressure (usually!) and his defensive positioning get overlooked - partly because we notice his tricks and craftily weighted passes.

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

Keep Jensen or not, you have to analyse the decision in context: do you sell/loan someone else? Does someone get annoyed with Keith because they are not getting minutes? Does he run down his contract and we have less to spend? Sangare and Konak's returns pose these unavoidable questions.

I’ll answer these easy ones: Sangere >> Jensen >>>> Konak

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

I suspect those highlighting his quality and class, plus last season's contributions, may be hitting upon why a move away could be on the cards.

At 31, Matty probably wants to be playing week in, week out. Something we are increasingly unlikely to offer him. Yes, it's the PL and all that comes with that, but he's getting more and more obstacles in front of him to those minutes.

I love Matty, he has possibly been one of our most underrated players......certainly in W235 over the years. He deserves the chance to play each week, run the show for a team & compete for some trophies.

Don't be sad it's over, be happy it happened.

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

All depends on his mindset.

1. Bit part player with us while we go through transition period of our new younger crop of midfielders coming through.
2. Week in week out. With I’m guessing European football too.

You can’t deny his class. But we now can’t guarantee him a starting position this season. So if he wants to be playing and chance of European football I see him going. Really would be closing the chapter that got us here.

Konak probably deputises for Janelt/Yarmo at the 6 now that Henderson has gone, with Sangare/Yarmo as an 8 and Dams as an 8/10. Jensen, in your eval, would go from a regular starter to being a bench performer at 8, especially if JDS, and Milambo push to understudy that 8 spot. Then you have Carvalho understudying Dams at 10.

Jensen was great last season but, for me, it was also because he got to start a steady run of games. His performances have always been more volatile off the bench.

Bearing in mind his contract situation and age, is now the time to maximise value, like we did with Norgaard? Or is the above the right balance for midfield places if we can keep everyone happy (and how likely is that 'if')?

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

From the few encounters I’ve had with him and his family, his only consideration will be his wife and family.
Yeah, better for all parties that he stays I would have thought.

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

Would be a shame, he’s only 25 appearances away from 300 for us as well which would be quite the achievement.

However, if he wants to play regularly a move does make sense, and if the club want to see Milambo develop properly this would probably help in that regard too.

As injuries are commonplace in midfielders and we usually have our fair share of them, I would definitely want to keep Jensen and Damsgaard vying for the creative midfielder role.

This , unless Greece can give him more money and a better life style he's better off staying or finding some where else . I guess he's never been one of the mega earners ? So maybe a couple of years self inflicted exile to Saudi after next season to set himself up dosh wise and then see out his career in Denmark

He’s got young children and I’d say their education will come first, so access to Danish schools will be high on the tick-list. I think he’s that sort of person.

Good post but he is 30 not 31.

Good point - he is much better when he starts than when he comes on as a sub.

Another strength is that he understands the system/systems that we play. Both he and Vitaly seem to be confident and successful when running the midfield - more so than Jordan was to my eyes. They just quietly get on with it.

I think he's more important organisationally than we may realise - and with new players coming in this influence is needed at the moment.

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

He was one of our most consistent midfielders last season.
He did also seem rather grumpy at times about being more peripheral to the team than he’d like. Which he responded to by being fire on the pitch when coming on.

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

I'm suprised no one has mentioned his leadership capabilities. He often has the captains armband and without Hendo can we really afford to loose another senior leader? One of just a very small number of the remaining promotion team and if we had such a thing as club captain surely he'd be it?

Mathias Jensen (Panathinaikos)

He did, but I’d be surprised if that happened again this season. If Damsgaard can rediscover anything close to his form from the season before last he’s pretty much nailed on to start in the number 10 role you would have thought, and in the pivot behind a fit again Janelt, Yarmo and now Sangaré are probably all ahead of him as starting options.

I’d love Jensen to stay, I’m just unsure if we can guarantee him a starting role, which is something he may want on a consistent basis at this stage in his career.

I also have that same feeling, he got a lot of minutes last year because at some point, the situation in midfield was dire because of the injuries. I was expecting him to have a similar role to Pinnock last year.
Not sure if he'd be happy as a full time role player, his contract situation might indicate something in that direction too.
