The 2006-2007 Season

20 years since this car crash season. Relegation. Rock bottom of League One. Leroy’s walk down the Braemar touch line after the 4-0 home defeat against Crewe.

Thomas Pinault, Neil Shipperley and Callum Willock appeared for the Bees that season. That’s how bad it was.

Post your memories, good and bad, below.

Winning on day 1 and feeling like we looked more positive than when hanging on to a lead under MA

Hard to believe we started the season with seven games unbeaten. Scrambling a late point away to a poor Orient side for the last of those seven and thinking "hmmm that really wasn't great"

Drawing 2-2 with Gillingham with John Mousinho in goal for an hour. I still think of that game every time I see his name.

Losing to Doncaster, which became a habit over the season and future seasons!

The comedy og from Griffiths (?) In the first minute on Boxing Day.

Ending the long winless run with a win over Chesterfield, singing "we are staying up" and hardly believing that could possibly happen.

That's the first half of the season anyway

The 2006-2007 Season

Bill Axbey's last season before he passed iirc, not a great send off.

I moved back down south towards the end of the season and I think that madness of a game v Vale was my first home after moving, quality game. Lived in Crewe when they humped us 0-4 at home, remember listening on beesplayer with a Crewe fan, humiliatingly. Was obvious early on we were doomed. Dont think I even bothered with the away game there despite it being a 10 min walk from what was home, although I may have moved south by then.

Did Orient away though, Tillen scored a good goal I think, looked a half decent player but never had much of a career.

The 2006-2007 Season

Dark days...I remember

Chris Moore the Coca Cola Kid
Going mental for a late Tillen equaliser away to Orient
12.30 kick off at home to Millwall on Boxing Day and getting battered
Kuffour scoring the winning goal at home to Chesterfield a couple days later
Huddersfield away where we somehow won 2-0 with a Charlie Ide goal

Not much else....

The 2006-2007 Season

What game was the Kuffour overhead kick goal, one of the few highlights.

The 2006-2007 Season

Only 8 wins all season but doing the double over Blackpool, who got promoted through the play offs. Weird.

The 2006-2007 Season

Remember the start to that season and thinking this isnt going too badly even though our performances didnt warrant the good start.

Scenes at Northampton and Brighton away (can still picture that net moving from 7 miles away in the away end at the Withdean).

After that it was horrid and i dont remember much of it.

I think this was one of the seasons that i started to play more then go and watch us after that good form vanished. Just felt like the soul had been sucked out of the club "again" after the MA years.

A hard watch, but a season where MB got involved so every cloud and that.

The 2006-2007 Season

One of the benefits of the the GPGs great age and venerability is that if you go back far enough in the archives you can follow every moment of the 06/07 season 'live' as it were in the matchday posts. Looking back its interesting to see how positively Leroy was viewed very early on. He was seen as a breath of fresh air after the, ahem, pragmatic, approach of MA's sides. There was even a lot of praise for Pinault in the early weeks. I think by the time of the late escape against Orient, even though we were still unbeaten 7 games into the season we'd already realised that things weren't quite right.

The 2006-2007 Season

I seem to remember that Pinault and Skulason made a good pairing until Skulason got injured (again!) In the 4th game or so. We never recovered.

The 2006-2007 Season

Thankfully I had just moved to Cheshire after a few years in Belgium and had one of the most intense professional years of my life plus 3 kids under the age of 15 so the whole thing kinda passed me by a bit. Went to a handful of depressing away games in the north Oldham, Rotherham etc. Don’t think I saw us score a goal :(
So glad our glory days came around when I had retired and kids have grown up :)

The 2006-2007 Season

That Tuesday night in December where we were 4 down v Doncaster at home with about 20 minutes to go and I ranted at my dear old dad ‘why do we bother’ looking at our row in New Road completely empty.
That moment in time where you almost doubt yourself.
To truly enjoy the best of times you have to endure and appreciate the worst.

I remember this happening that season.

Some of the things I remember from that season.

My son's first game v Gillingham. We ended up with a midfielder in goal and him crying because we got soaked walking from the car and he was cold. He's probably missed fewer than a dozen home games since then.

Jo Kuffour's overhead kick, still one of my favourite goals

The Brentford CEO buying me breakfast in the Albany cafe outlining what players they were hoping to get in.

Said CEO giving an excruciating PowerPoint presentation at a Fans forum.

Walking through Windsor Great Park with my wife and two young kids one Sunday explaining to Greg Dyke how best to give me £1000

Driving from work in Hounslow to GP pretty much every day for about 6 weeks to pick up regular cash and cheque deposits from Peter Gilham.

An increasing gloom as I watched Neil Shipperly, realising I was never going to get any of that time back.

The 2006-2007 Season

Great trip down a (dark) memory lane.

Northampton away early on, I got in under the 'kid for a quid' scheme, despite being only 3 weeks short of my 23rd birthday.

I remember the shock and surprise at learning we were 3-0 up at Blackpool after about 30 minutes.

The Forest home game, 2-4, Pinault scored a lovely Cantona-esque chip. I think that might've been the first game with fans in the stand, after putting the roof on Ealing Road?

The 2006-2007 Season

Northampton at home, I remember for some reason it was the Monday Night football on Sky sport. We were off the back of a couple of wins, but were absolutely dreadful and they scored a screamer. If it hadnt been obvious before that team was going down, it felt it that night....

The 2006-2007 Season

Too many games featuring Clark Masters in goal. Scott Fitzgerald’s taste in neckerchiefs.

I try to forget the rest. Truly a miserable time that extended well into the next season under Butcher.

The 2006-2007 Season

Charlie Ide looked like the next big thing for half a dozen games. Michael Leary seemed to get booked in every match he played. We played Simon Cox as a central midfielder. John Mousinho played in goal. Neil Shipperley didn't put 1,000 on the gate. Fola Onibuje gave us all hope of becoming professional footballers.

The 2006-2007 Season

I remember before the season started we were essentially told ‘the squad is complete’, looking at the squad and realising what was very likely to happen.

The 2006-2007 Season

Bad, bad memories... met Fola Onibuje in Yates's in Ealing Broadway, he tried to take the piss out of Brentford fans. He didn't hang around for long....🥊:redcard::nono::wave:

The 2006-2007 Season

The first time I realised we were in big trouble was away to Chesterfield. Got there late on that one (we had a good following that day too) and had to sit on our hands in the home support ... with a bunch of weirdo's obsessing over hating Mansfield. Again memory might be wrong here but I think we went 2 or 3-0 down early in that game and had a mifield of Carde Andrews, Ryan Peters and John Mousinho. We were out of our depth!

I remember the away to Blackpool best, I think we were signing 84, 84, 84? In terms of the number of fans we had there? (correct me if im wrong).

And we went 3-0 up before half time, and a bloke called Thompson managed us for 1 game? Kuffour did his best that season and I remember Nathan Abbey being brilliant too when Nelson was unavailable?

Was it that season we played at the athletic stadium in Rotherham too? God that was awful

I was there for the game that we got sent down (mathematically ) too I think, away at Crewe with a Kev penalty.

Just noticed we barely scraped 4k at home for the Doncaster defeat... I guess many saw it coming.

An obvious thing to say, but 20 years later.... going into our 6th season in the premier league? There's no words to describe how unlikely that is.

Chesterfield was exactly the same day as my first child was born ! We didn’t win till after Xmas from memory. Disgrace of a season

I was at Blackpool my memory is it was Gary Thompson. Edit: checked www and his game was 1-1 in 2004

Who was at fault for this season @nocoat?

I think from memory we lost Tabb, Owusu, Rankin, Gayle, DJ Campbell, Turner, Sodje and Newman from season before which was basically all our best players. We lost Martin Allen as our manager and I think we all knew before the season we were in trouble.

Forgive my ignorance and memory, but why was it allowed to happen? Were we still paying off Noades and needed to raise cash?

Been supporting us for 30 years now, I feel like due to our recent success my memory has chosen to forget 2006-2009

The 2006-2007 Season

We were skint and hired a manager who was the direct opposite of the previous incumbent. As for the signings. Abbey and Kuffour apart they were ghastly.

The 2006-2007 Season

I remember the Gillingham and Chesterfield games well.

The Chesterfield game was played in monsoon like weather conditions and I think they were there leveller we needed 😂

The 2006-2007 Season

I had just moved up to Cheltenham and remember going with a mate to the Cheltenham away game. Was sat in the home stand and they knew I was Brentford. We were so bad and I was so pissed off, instead of the home fans laying into me, they were actually quite nice about it and tried to make me feel better.

So glad our glory days came around when I had retired and kids have grown up :)

Much the same here, moved away for work, young family, missed a lot of football, can remember thinking a few times being glad I had other priorities as I didn’t know how people were watching it.

The 2006-2007 Season

Took my sister to her one and only game at GP - the Crewe game. I was losing my sh*t big time and she never came back. Now she has kids they come to the new stadium and are quite invested, we never really talk about that night against Crewe :)

The 2006-2007 Season

I'd just got divorced in 2006, then landed in a relationship with a raving psycho, so I don't have any recollection of that season.

Blessings in disguise! :D

Did Rosenior ever properly manage again?
No. He had the briefest of brief stints as Sierra Leone head coach then that comical appointment at Torquay where he was sacked 10 minutes later.

The 2006-2007 Season

Cheltenham away, just checked November. They were seen as relegation rivals. Club laid on free coaches, so was good numbers there.

I was 15. Me and my mates dad got clonked in the head with wayward shooting of our strikers warming up, writing was on the wall... Lost 2-0. Fola Onionbhaji was comically bad when he came on. Then our club provided coach broke down on the motorway in the pissing rain, I think it was the windscreen swiper. Didn’t get home to Ruislip till 3am. Pauline(?) steward told me “it’s in your blood though”, I told her to cut it out!!

Had another mate join us who was a Watford fan, his dad picked him up and left us to wait for coach to get us back to Brentford. *****! Ah memories. These things make blips in the prem easy for me to handle. Life is good as a bee.

The 2006-2007 Season

The Oldham away game, were we 3 down at half time? Was with a latics mate and his pals and they felt so sorry for me they bought me a pie.

One for another thread, but Boundary Park is one of a handful of grounds I’ve been in all 4 stands at. Craven Cottage, Loftus Road, Highbury, Brisbane Road others that leap to mind.

This. And my impression was Leroy was a glass-half-full manager who set his teams up to play nice football and stuffed them with players with no appetite for a relegation battle. The signings were bad, but he also inherited Owusu and Skulason as the marquee players up front and in midfield and then promptly lost Owusu for almost the whole season and Skulason to just never really getting over the injury that kept him our for all the previous season.
