Maybe, and I have no great knowledge etc, but It does not seem good to me. Another player from a relegated team, a team that conceded nearly 2 goals a game, and reportedly a player that wanted out because he didn't like the terms in the contract that he had signed. Just my view.
Or a player who had just seen his relegated team lose their first game of the season at home to a local rival, while meanwhile the club in a higher league that wants to sign him has thrashed a club that has just spent £250 million or so on new players. I trust PG and co have already ensured he passes the 'dickhead' test in terms of fitting into the team culture.

Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?
Looks that way. Must be planning for next season if he’s unlikely to stay beyond his current deal

El Hadji Malick Diouf (LB, West Ham, 21)

You've said it. As painful as it is, Rico's time with us is drawing to a close and his replacement is on the verge of joining us. Succession planning is what you're seeing.
I also think it's longer term succession planning. If he keeps going the way he is sadly Kayode quite likely leaves for big money next summer and KLP and Hickey could both be right backs if you had a player on the left in Diouf who hopefully has some of Kayode's assets, strength, pace, likes to go forward.

El Hadji Malick Diouf (LB, West Ham, 21)

I'm curious what the thinking is here...maybe an assumption that Rico will leave soon? Or maybe we see Diouf as versatile for different positions, bit like KLP. 100% sure that this has been well thought through and clearly MB wouldn't sanction £40m without a strategy, I just can't quite see what it is!
That is why the management team are so good, they see things everyone else cant. I dont even question now on these matters, why would l?

It’s on record we try to plan two windows in advance. Rico unlikely to still be here next year so it’s forward planning.
This is classic Brentford, track the player over multiple seasons then swoop when he becomes available in this case due to West Ham’s relegation.

I think Rico, as much as he's been one of my favourite players for many years, will be performing an Ethan Pinnock back-up role this season. Unfortunately, he's no longer a top premier league full back, if indeed he ever was with his lack of crossing ability, and certainly not a top wing back. KLP will move forward. Diouf will be our first choice with Hickey as cover for both left and right back. I don't see the need to ship any players out, and especially not Schade.

I agree with forward planning but would Brentford really spend £40m on a left back?? There has to be some alternative clever thinking here

In a world where Liam Delap is "worth" £50 Million, all bets are pretty much off.

I think we’ve got to a point where, if we believe there’s a player who ticks all the boxes any time now or in the near future, becomes available, we’ll negotiate the best deal we can to ‘get him in the building’. It seems like building for the next level.

Coventry looking for a LB?…

A technical full back, got a great cross on him, and no doubt we'll focus on getting his defensive work up to scratch. I can see an awful lot of headers being scores this season.

We're going to have flying full backs creating opportunities from both flanks. Physical, quick, and very technical on both sides of the pitch.

I wonder if we move Henry on and add a bit of value from a transfer fee for a player with one year left on his contract. He's been an unbelievable player for us over the years, and it might suit both parties of he secures a longterm contract elsewhere.

given his age (21) and his delivery prowess and explosive speed, this could be one to develop into a left sided attacking left wing.. 2 years of development ready to take over KS.

All reasonable points. But against that is the fact that PG/LD/MB/KA all think this is a good deal to do. Whilst I can't say what their reasoning is, I'm very happy to trust it based on past experience.

I think if he signs then we're not going to see much of Rico any more.

It might also be succession planning for Kayode. If he were to leave next summer we retain a similar level of energy, pace, power and attacking threat at full back. It just comes from the other side.

Would be a very smart move to bring in Rico with his understanding with Ethan. Could go a long way towards keeping them in the league.

banana suggests circumstances have changed….
It certainly isn’t the price because that always seemed to be around £40m
Given we are not under pressure to buy, and no other serious interest reported from others, I would bet that we have got a discount here and we just don't know about it.

We've been told in the past that it's convention that clubs don't correct fees quoted in the media, downwards.
So we were talking at £40m, now we've gone back and done a deal quoted as around £40m, but in reality we held all the cards and negotiated a discount.

West Ham briefing a higher price and so keeping their fans sweet because "at least they got their full asking price"

We must be selling Henry to Spurs for £55m!!

Oh dear. Now for the inevitable.
Very sad but no room for too much sentiment, we’re playing with the big, big boys now!
In management we trust.

Looking forward to his end of summer window round-up... 🥰

It'll be like the old Yellow Pages advert...

FADE IN:

INT. COMPACT OFFICE - DAY

MUSIC CUE: Melancholy piano

A MAN sits at a desk, holding a chewed biro in his hand. In front of him sits a copy of the Yellow Pages. The man sighs as he crosses through another one of the adverts on the pages.

Taking a deep breath, he reaches for the telephone and dials a number.

MAN
"Do you have a copy of 'Expert Premier League Fishing' by P.R. Giles? You do? Oh that's wonderful...Can you keep it for me? My name? Oh yes...it's P.R. Giles..."

FADE OUT
