So they play a 20 team league to eliminate 4 teams from the "play offs". Sounds like the NFL

31 teams in PL2 but each team only plays 20 games against opponents. Top 16 play off for champions something something something and the next 8 (17-24) play top 8 in prof dev league (where we were last year and played in these play offs) for something else.

PL2 27/27 : How the competition works​

There are 31 teams participating in PL2 this season, with AFC Bournemouth and Brentford added to the 29 teams who took part in the 2025/26 competition after they gained Category One status.

Fixtures are determined by a draw made according to the participating clubs' positions in the three seeded groups.

The seeds are based on performances over the previous three seasons: top tier - 1st-10th; Middle tier - 11-21st; Bottom tier - 22nd-31st.

There are 20 Matchweeks, with each team playing 20 matches during the regular season, 10 home and 10 away.

Teams will play no more than eight and no fewer than six teams from each of the seeded groups, making up the 20 fixtures.

Results (three points for a win and one point for a draw) generate a combined table ranking the 31 teams.

After the regular season of 20 Matchweeks is completed, the top 16 teams qualify for the elimination playoffs.

Brentford Under-21s got their 2026/27 Premier League 2 season off to a flying start with a 3-2 win over Stoke City Under-21s. Kaye Furo and Theo Mawene scored in the win, with an own goal rounding out the goals for the young Bees.
