I have always wondered about that. When he got the set piece job PG said "He is someone we have known for a while and always had in mind for a role”. Somehow or another he must have made quite an impression for us to be looking for a way to give him a job when there are so many coaches out there.
I think that was the clue. We wanted him 'in the building' and in the pipeline for further scrutiny, so found a job for him that didn't cause any issues. A bit like "signed for the B Team" has been sometimes.

Cueva was leaving for Chelsea so we also had a vacancy.

Coach we want + coaching vacancy = problem solved!

I think it was also down to Andrews wanting to get himself inside the building as he knew it would be good for his development as a coach, and that we had form for promoting from within.

But how did we even know him? He must have been quite assertive in getting himself in front of Giles et al.

I would imagine we know an awful lot of people in the coaching world. Suspect we get countless requests from unattached, upcoming coaches to come and observe...

Remember, football is a village. Must have come across him in the local.

I believe he did come into see us numerous times when a pundit for Sky, he’s always looking at improving his coaching skills. Even when playing at MK Dons, he often went and watched forthcoming opponents and fed back scouting reports.

Its posted on here somewhere. By someone else but remember the story told was a manager went to scout a player, sat next to Keith, asked him why he was there as he was still a player. Keith answer was, I'm told xxxx may sign for us, i want to know his game, so if he does , I will already know about his game.
Apparently the player did not sign but he was there just in case. B
Shows his diligence and thought process perfectly.

Can't imagine many other players doing that, not even some managers. That is obsessive attention to detail.

It was Martin Allen who told that story

Love the response to the Hendo reception.....didn't see it, too focused on our performance.
I agree - it was a masterful and understated deflection of a potentially awkward question . It was almost as if he was giving the message to the fan base - ‘I have got your back as much as the team have got it and I will protect that - move on ‘ ‘

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

I think KA's response to our third goal (Calvaho's) was purely because the instruction he gave the player before he came on yield that goal

"come on just beyond the second post", "run in to the space even if it looks lost" etc.

I can't remember where the whole brief was but it seemed extremely long for the amount of time KA was in Calvaho's ear just before he came on.

Rather like that policeman and whip at the exit to Downing Street.

As long as he didn’t call Fab a pleb!

With a decent haul of points in the opening few weeks of the season, Keith Andrews is now up to 130 in the all time PL Manager, in the points total. He now has our old friends of Steve Cooper & Scott Parker in his sights, along with Ossie Ardiles. Assuming it doesn't take him too many games to gain the 3/4 points to overhaul them, he'll have done it in a considerably lower game count.

Keith has now reached joint 123rd in the premier league manager of all time, with 63 points, alongside Gus Poyet & Bruce Rioch.
Win on Sat against Liverpool will see him leapfrog Ray Harford, Guus Hiddink & Steve Clarke.

Not a particulary earth shattering viewpoint, but Keith comes across so well when talking about our players, at least in written form - Brentford v Liverpool Premier League team news: Keith Andrews provides Kevin Schade and Jannik Schuster injury update - Brentford FC

Super positive re Outtara and Sangare.
The earth shattering news is that after so many years the club has finally sorted the press conference audio quality so we can hear the questions being asked.

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

That was one if the best press conferences Ive ever heard. Good questions and if they wern't, his answers made them good.
I only watch other managers/head coaches press conferences when we play their teams, but is there anyone more impressive currently than KA the way he handles the questions?

So impressed with how Keith fielded the question about YY’s red card in his MOTD interview:

“I think we should do better…He’s an amazing young man, I love him to bits…We need to look at ourselves and not the officials with that one.”

In just a couple of sentences, Keith (a) takes collective responsibility by saying “we”, (b) is entirely supportive of Yehor, (c) avoids getting drawn into criticising the ref more generally, which he would have been well within his rights to do.

I totally respect and admire his honesty.

After drawing only 4 of our first 28 Premier League games under Keith, we've now drawn 12 of the last 18. Made it through nearly half a season's worth of games (last 18) only losing to City and United away and Liverpool at home, but only 3 wins and 21pts in that spell too.

I think he's doing a fantastic job and we've been a bit unlucky... but it'd be nice to start getting a few over the line.

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

We are always trying to win. Today we threw on an extra striker and committed men forward; we don't play for draws. That we are getting so many atm is probably a stat which ultimately doesn't mean anything much.

It may be that having had a season and a bit to have a look at Keith/his teams, maybe opponents are now setting up better to negate Brentford?

While Thiago finding a bit of form could turn a lot of those draws into victories.

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

Over-thought it a bit today I think. Hickey in midfield might have made sense against a top team but against Hull it was a negative move.

Sangarre and Jensen deeper with Damsgaard pushing forward from the start should easily have coped with their limited attacking threat and would have caused their defence much more trouble first half.

Stat is that apart from today we’ve led in every other match. How do you retain leads rather than we are trying to win when drawing is the question to answer. Getting two goals in front would help and we’ve had opportunities to do that

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

I feel there is a lack of consistency in the team selections that is affecting the quality of our play - a lot of this is due to injuries and suspensions

EFL cup was always going to have squad rotation

However when team selection has required a change in personnel the decisions being made haven’t come off - mainly because of individual mistakes

we need a run of players playing in their best positions and we should see an improvement

Hasn’t been a disaster this season by any stretch, but I thought last two games it clearly wasn’t working by half time. Yet on both occasions he left it until the 60th minute to make changes.

As do 99% of managers in 99% of games where they're losing at half time.

If a manager backs their own game plan (as they should, considering they were the ones that set it up!) then it's always worth seeing if the reset that half time offers will allow their pre-match vision to come to fruition. If, after another 15 minutes, the half time reset hasn't made a difference, then that's the obvious time to make a change.

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

There's lessons to be learned about messing about with formations, which couldn't have helped with the player rotations, but there were players that let him down badly, both regular starters and stand-ins.

Keith Andrews (Head Coach)

It was individual mistakes, so I'm not landing the blame on his door at all. The first 30 minutes we looked like the only team who could score. Then a couple of easy errors later and we're 2-0 down, shortly 3-0 and could have even been 4-1 down. There is a reason we're not starting Valdimarsson and Diouf in games, and I'm starting to think the former doesn't have much of a future if that's his level after the years he's been with us. Maybe that's harsh, but yesterday didn't fill me with confidence.

I can't blame Andrews though. He's played strong sides in this tournament this year (and last) and we didn't go out through rotating our whole team like we may have done under Frank. We threw that game away but it's not on Andrews door.

... very little KA....or a for that matter...any coach can do about individual errors.... however....he can do something about the system and the players he picks to play in that system...there has been a lack of cohesion recently and as a team collectively we've looked lost and all over the place...we have several players who are not currently performing at a level that they have in the past.... it's KAs job to identify what the problem is in order to fix it.... whether that can be done by Saturday might be a big ask tbh...I think it could possibly take a bit longer.

Not trying to sound rude, but that is complete nonsense. Leeds, Liverpool, and Spurs all did it against us when down at HT this season alone.

The fact remains that not making those changes didn't work, we started both second halves poorly and only kicked on a bit once the subs were made. There is backing your game plan, and there is being slow to react to the situation. It's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things as KA is a very good manager, but if we are down at HT on Saturday it will be interesting to see if any lessons have been learnt.

Scoring 5 minutes before half time might have convinced him that the 11 on the pitch were worth persevering with.

We just look ill equipped to deal with teams pressing us hard and high and then dropping off. Basically what we did first half of last season.

We're not comfortable passing through the lines yet. I thought we might be able to progress quickly, but it feels like we're having a bit of an adjustment period, not helped by an unfair reputation among officials...no idea where that's come from, and it's pretty problematic.

KA needs to earn his corn in adapting quickly, as we're going to fall behind at this rate...though that we're still 6th after being mediocre for the past few weeks says a lot about where our levels are...

....my take.... get back to playing wide men Keith....Schade and Ouattara playing off Thiago... play midfielders who can support our attacks...
. attack being your best form of defence.. especially at home... it's what your team is good at....or at least was😬

I think Liverpool's half-time sub was more to do with Yarmo getting sent off, knowing they could now go for it, as opposed to a reaction to a bad first half performance, which is what we're talking about here.

Re. Spurs and Leeds, it's apples and oranges. We absolutely dominated them both in the first half of those games, they both looked totally outclassed by us for just about the entire 45 minutes. That is in no way what happened last night or at Hull.

We were the better team for 30 of the 45 minutes last night, and all three of Sunderland's goals were the fault of individual mistakes, not because Sunderland were suddenly playing amazingly. And as Les mentioned, we also got one back before half time, which is always an important factor in these decisions.

I can absolutely understand your argument, but it relies entirely on hindsight. IMO Keith did what the vast majority of managers, both good and bad, would've done in his position. I do agree though that there are some lessons Keith will hopefully learn from these games to help us achieve our wildest dreams going forward.

My last comment was meant to be the opposite of doom and gloom! Results haven't gone our way, yet we're still 6th.

And our ability to beat the top teams is still there, it's against teams who treat us as the bigger threat where we struggle recently.

We beat Spurs and Chelsea, lost 10v12 against Liverpool, and drew against...Villa, Leeds, Sunderland, Hull, and Bournemouth, either our peers or "below". We're struggling to impose our gameplan when we're treated as the "aggressor", and that is where we're suffering. This was a continuation of that, as Sunderland had no intention of playing football. Worst for me was when that winger rolled on the ground for 5 minutes clutching his head, feigning head injury for Diouf's high boot...when there was literally zero contact.

THAT is where I would like to see VAR intervention, he should be yellow carded. There were countless cases against last night of Sunderland players dropping like flies, while we stood our ground and didn't get decisions. I KNOW we all hate to see it, but we need to speak with the refs and make it understood: if that is what gets decisions, we need to start pretending we've been shot. As we're not getting the decisions atm., and it's not because we're in the wrong, it's about perception.

I didn't understand the bit where you said we've been mediocre for a few weeks I guess. Did you mean a week?
