Rail passengers get automatic right to switch operators for free when trains are cancelled

‘Commonsense change’ looks to end current confusion and put ‘passengers first, not shareholders’ when services are disrupted

Rail passengers whose trains are cancelled will have the immediate right to travel on other operators’ services to finish their journey without further charge, ministers have announced.

The “commonsense change” will take effect from Sunday 20 September, ending the confusion in Britain where many pre-booked tickets are not valid on other firms’ trains.

Fairly clear here I thought “able to travel on another operator’s train two hours before or after the original cancelled service, on a reasonable alternative route.”

Just a small helpful change to make people’s lives easier and better, more of this sort of thing please @TheGovernment

Yes, my only train route back from Reading tonight to Surbiton would rely on a six minute changeover at Basingstoke and assuming a cross country train running on time. Which 100% isn't happening, so I'm opting for Lizzie Line to Ealing and 65 bus.

That’s a LOOOOONG bus journey, I grew up around the corner from Ealing Broadway, bus from there to Chessington Zoo took about 2 hours iirc

When I was coming in on GWR for the Sunderland game, the train suddenly "terminated" at Reading, and the announcement said we could get another Paddington train on a different platform leaving in 15(?) mins. But I asked in the ticket office and the guy assured me that I could use my ticket for the Elizabeth Line instead, which although leaving a few minutes after the GWR alternative, would get me to the GTech quicker, since I could get off at Ealing Broadway on the way in, rather than having to carry on to Paddington and come back out again.

And when I got off at Ealing Bdwy, the guy on the ticket barrier hardly even looked at my ticket, he just scanned me through.

Yes, likewise my journey back from Leeds to Winchester via Birmingham on Cross Country ended up being TPE to Manchester, Avanti to Rugby, WMR to Coventry and Cross Country to Winchester.

They all let me through but under the current rules they could've insisted I waited for the next Cross Country train, which would've meant a taxi from Birmingham to Winchester.

GWR gearing up for public ownership as from mid December by running trains into Euston at the end of November for a couple of days.

Two trains per hour, one each from Swansea and Bristol Temple Meads all via Oxford and MK into Euston.

Sleeper service will also terminate at Euston that weekend via Ascot.

This will also be the case at Christmas and into the new year when London Paddington is inaccessible for engineering work.

As GWR will be part of GBR by then then the routes will certainly be a bit more fluid.

When I lived in Hanwell I used to get on the E1 or E3 ? at the top of my road .Pay 5p fair or some thing and travel to Chessington not get off and back again to Hanwell .We didnt have a car so I used it as a sort of day out

That's me then 😁

Having that I regularly get the WMR cattle truck to Euston wading through #cans on floor to get off.
Having the luxury of sitting with the chavs drinking champagne 🍾 on Avanti.
Because the WMR driver cried off sick from a heavy session night before.
Game changer for me....

Me and a friend of mine once circumnavigated London on the old 'Outer Zone Buspass' for the princely sum of 50p

Thanks for the heads-up. Is there somewhere which gives more detail, in case it affects my travel for Everton (21 Nov) or Arsenal (02 Dec)?
