I know he was a Benham/Smartodds man. I also know it’s not quite the same as the market for a player or coach where there is a lot of poaching between clubs.
But this guy has got an incredible record. Since he has been in charge of the minutiae of negotiations for our ins and outs, we have managed to turn a monumental profit whilst maintaining an ‘above-our-weight’ position for 4 seasons in a row. We have got a reputation for it now, it’s no longer under the radar or questioned by the media.
Surely a Premier League club (perhaps Newcastle) will eventually offer him a serious role?
P.S - Mods feel free to merge with some of the earlier threads.
I'm not going to disagree with you, however I will point out - its not always greener outside the club.
We say that often about the players, and mostly we are right. Only a few have really gone on to bigger things, earned more money and better transfers.
But what about backroom staff?
Let's go back to when we had Uwe Rosler.
Uwe Rosler left us for Wigan, done well in his first season, but his first FULL season, he got sacked after a poor start. Same happened at Leeds, and eventually ended up at Fleetwood before he, again, was sacked. He actually went backwards after us and is now in Sweden with Malmo.
Mark Warburton.... Left us for Rangers, resigned in similar fashion to us (couldn't hack it? wasn't in his control no more?) and left. Then went to Nottingham Forest before being sacked there after 6-7 months which included a Summer break and is now at QPR. David Weir is in this boat as he followed Mark.
Frank McParland tried to do things his way. Wasn't allowed and was sacked for it. He then went to Rangers with Mark and quit with Mark and David. When Mark got the Forest job, he went there and, again, got dismissed. Currently unemployed.
Andy Scott. I like Andy. He is humble and honest, even if he does love a right winger. He left us for Watford. Done relatively well there before losing his job (contract not extended). Recently taken on a role at Swansea. Had it easy with us if you ask me.
Dean Smith (and his team) are probably the only ones to leave and excel - but in truth it should have happened anyway at Aston Villa with the squad he had but he is an exciting (and relatively) young in the managerial world. He will improve and I hope they do well that his own profile gets bigger. I like Dean.
I can not really write much on Marinus as he was here 5 minutes....
Am I missing anyone?
Coaches?
What I am saying is, if Phil did leave Smartodds and went to someone like Newcastle, there is absolutely no guarantee that he can replicate the type of business he has done with us. The margins are finer up in the premier league. Can easily sign a £30m striker but to get a good profit from them you are expecting him to be able to sign these to sell again at approximately £70m. It is just not possible on a consistent basis. What has helped us is the coaching team that we have too. They have a great influence on the players progress, not just who we sign.
