So Sangare, Yarmo, Jensen, Damsgaard no good then? You just want three big units. Even Arsenal, the most physically impressive side in the EPL know they need someone like Odegaard.

No. I'm saying I would like a midfield that is consistent and holds their ground. We have excellent players in their positions but so often they don't work well as a unit.

Hmm, the same midfield that dominated Eintracht and Spurs, and had Brum chasing shadows? The problem on Saturday came down our RHS, which is where Sunderland had most of their success in the first half. Sangare was covering for the gaps being exploited by Sunderland on that RHS but had to come off because he was a red card waiting to happen. Hickey, Yarmo and Anthony steadied the ship second half and we were the much better team.

Considering Sangaré, who you'd expect to be a regular member of the midfield, has only played 2½ games, I don't think any judgement can be made about the midfield right now. Midfielders often cover the furthest distance during a game and it's entirely reasonable to expect a significant amount of rotation.

Definitely agree. We're evidently changing up our tactics slightly this season and it hasn't necessarily been to IT's benefit so far (in terms of goalscoring).

The rest of the league (well, besides Spuds...) are now well aware that KA is no mug and we continue to be just as dangerous on the counter as we've always been, so are treating us with more respect by sitting deeper, meaning less opportunity for through balls to IT.

And we also seem to be putting a HEAVY focus on crosses this season, but as you say, Igor's role in that appears to be receiving the ball from deep, holding it up and then playing it out wide to the crossers, rather than prowling around the box and waiting to be the one on the end of the crosses as we'd probably expect.

His role in the team is still absolutely vital though, and I think his pressing and work rate is still just as elite as last season, so I can't say I'm worried about him at all.

I think 25 goals last season would indicate he worked that out. He got nothing from refs last season.

I know xG isn’t for everyone, but Igor’s non-penalty xG this season is already 1.5, i.e. a goal every other game. Not too shabby 😉. Once the first goes in, they’ll flow…

Shouldn't have signed that new contract then.

He's shown that our club size is no bar to him getting an international call up. His form, and bettering that of Joao Pedro, is key. Pedro appears to have had a very good start to the season and I imagine that is mainly what's seen Thiago drop out of the Brazil squad.

I have a friend in Brazil and he told me that 1 match in the WC would be the last time he would play for Brazil. They tolerated his selection from a not big club because his goal scoring. But when he f*cked up the easy header there is no justification at all for his selection.

And that entire mindset is why they've one f*** all for ages. Honestly we think our national team discourse is toxic and cursed? Theirs is a whole new level.

Lots of Leeds fans were commenting after the game what an amazing striker Thiago is.

He's getting poor service at the moment and teams are also sitting deep against us because of the pace of our front 3, he was a lone striker against 3 CB's v Leeds and Sunderland for most of the game.

In fairness wouldn’t say this is him being made a scapegoat. Only 10 of the 26 that went to the World Cup are in the latest squad.

From what I can see their only fixtures this international break are friendlies away to Australia and India, so doesn’t exactly warrant Ancelotti picking his best possible squad. The likes of Cunha, Alisson, Martinelli for example are not there either.

To be fair, Pedro has scored 2 in first 3 games. So based purely on form we can’t be too disgruntled he’s not been chosen.

If Igor continues the scoring form he showed last season, he’ll be selected. People found it unbelievably a bees player lead the line, they’ll be able to believe a player who didn’t perform in one game will get another chance

He didn't 'not perform in one game' - he got next-to bugger-all service in that game, and was completely ignored by his teammates HTH

Clearly I was answering a post dealing with his treatment by referees, and writing about the position this season. To digress, and deal with your post there were nine penalties last season I believe, so rather difficult for referees to affect the kick.

Didn't Matthew Benham once say that he doesn't much care how many goals a striker scores, but how many the team scores when he's on the pitch?

On which point, 11 goals in four games (5 in 3 in the PL) is none too shabby.

While specifically regarding the Sunderland game, I agree he didn't make much of an impact, but with the midfield being outplayed for a lot of the game, his service was minimal. While it probably wasn't coincidental that Le Bris employed two big, strong, physical CB's to deal with him (even though both are right footed), while picking a RB who has also played CB.
